Social Skills
Communication & Social Interaction
Social skills therapy is designed to address difficulties in social communication and interaction. It begins with an assessment by an occupational therapist (OT) to identify specific social challenges and strengths. Based on this assessment, a customized treatment plan is developed to target the individual's unique needs.
Therapy sessions focus on teaching a range of social skills, including initiating and maintaining conversations, understanding non-verbal cues, taking turns, and developing empathy. Techniques used in therapy may include role-playing, social stories, and group activities that provide opportunities to practice and reinforce these skills in a structured environment. The OT might also use visual supports, such as social scripts and cue cards, to help individuals understand and navigate social situations.
By engaging in various interactive activities, individuals learn to recognize social cues, respond appropriately, and build confidence in their social interactions. The therapy often includes feedback and reflection to help individuals understand their social behavior and its impact on others. Regular monitoring and adjustments to the therapy plan ensure that it remains relevant and effective.
