Sensory Integration
Sensory Processing & Regulation
Sensory integration therapy is designed to address difficulties with sensory processing, which can affect how individuals respond to sensory stimuli such as touch, sound, and movement. The therapy begins with a comprehensive assessment by an occupational therapist (OT) to identify specific sensory challenges and how they impact daily functioning.
During therapy sessions, the OT uses a variety of sensory-rich activities tailored to the individual's needs. These activities might include swinging, bouncing, playing with textured materials, and other exercises that involve different senses. The goal is to help the brain process sensory information more effectively, leading to improved sensory regulation and overall functioning.
The therapy often takes place in a sensory-friendly environment equipped with specialized tools such as swings, crash mats, and sensory bins. Through guided, repetitive exposure to sensory stimuli, individuals learn to modulate their sensory responses, reducing over- or under-reactivity. The OT provides ongoing support and adjustments to ensure the therapy aligns with the individual's progress and needs.
