Handwriting
Fine Motor Skills & Educational Support
Handwriting therapy is designed to help individuals develop the fine motor skills and coordination needed for effective handwriting. Therapy begins with an assessment by an occupational therapist (OT) to identify specific handwriting difficulties, such as poor letter formation, inconsistent spacing, and issues with pencil grip.
During therapy sessions, the OT uses a variety of exercises and activities to address these challenges. Techniques may include practicing letter formation, engaging in fine motor activities to strengthen hand muscles, and using adaptive tools such as specialized grips and writing paper. The OT might also incorporate multisensory approaches, such as tracing letters in sand or forming letters with clay, to reinforce learning.
The therapy also focuses on posture and proper positioning during writing, as well as the development of visual-motor integration skills, which are crucial for aligning letters and words on the page. By providing structured and repetitive practice, the therapy aims to improve handwriting fluency and legibility, making writing a more efficient and less frustrating task for the individual.
