Home Exercise Program

Physical & Functional Health

A home exercise program is designed to supplement in-clinic therapy by providing individuals with tailored exercises that can be performed at home. The program begins with an assessment by an occupational therapist (OT) or physical therapist (PT) to determine specific physical needs, goals, and current abilities. Based on this assessment, the therapist creates a personalized exercise plan that addresses these areas.

The home exercise program typically includes a variety of exercises aimed at improving strength, flexibility, endurance, and coordination. These exercises may target specific areas of the body, such as the upper and lower limbs, core muscles, or specific joints affected by injury or medical conditions. The OT or PT provides detailed instructions and demonstrations to ensure that exercises are performed correctly and safely.

Exercises may include:

Strengthening exercises: Using resistance bands, weights, or body weight to build muscle strength.
Flexibility exercises: Stretching routines to improve range of motion and prevent stiffness.
Endurance exercises: Activities like walking, cycling, or low-impact aerobics to boost cardiovascular health and stamina.
Coordination and balance exercises: Tasks such as standing on one foot, heel-to-toe walking, or using a balance board to enhance stability and prevent falls.
The therapist also provides guidance on the frequency, duration, and progression of exercises to ensure that the program remains effective and aligned with the individual's goals. Regular follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor progress, adjust the exercise plan as needed, and address any challenges or concerns.
